These include <strong>steel, cement, glass, chemicals, shipping, and long-haul trucking<\/strong>, where energy density, process heat, and operational constraints can make direct electrification challenging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Climate Impact and What Must Change<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Replacing high-emissions grey hydrogen with green hydrogen could significantly reduce emissions in heavy industry and transport. Barile suggests green hydrogen could account for up to <strong>20%<\/strong> of total energy demand by <strong>2050<\/strong> if adopted widely, avoiding billions of tons of cumulative carbon emissions. The hurdle is cost: green hydrogen must fall from roughly <strong>$4 to $6 per kilogram<\/strong> to about <strong>$1 to $2 per kilogram<\/strong> to compete with less clean options. Achieving that depends on cheaper renewables, scaled electrolyzer manufacturing, expanded distribution infrastructure, and sustained policy support.
