The penalty is a <strong>162-game suspension<\/strong>, the standard length for a second offense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MLB said Profar tested positive for <strong>exogenous testosterone<\/strong> and its metabolites, meaning testosterone that was not produced by his body. Under the suspension, Profar is also <strong>ineligible for the postseason<\/strong> and the <strong>World Baseball Classic<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Appeal Filed Through MLBPA<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A person familiar with the process said the <strong>players\u2019 association<\/strong> filed a grievance at Profar\u2019s request, sending the matter to independent arbitrator <strong>Martin F. Scheinman<\/strong>. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because no formal announcement had been made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Profar\u2019s agent, <strong>Dan Lozano<\/strong>, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Second Offense Follows 2025 Suspension<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The new suspension follows an <strong>80-game ban<\/strong> issued on <strong>March 31, 2025<\/strong>, after Profar tested positive for <strong>Chorionic Gonadotrophin (hCG)<\/strong>, a hormone associated with stimulating testosterone production. At the time, Profar said he would not knowingly take a banned substance, while also accepting MLB\u2019s decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Braves said in a statement that they were <strong>\u201cincredibly disappointed\u201d<\/strong> by the failed test and emphasized that players are routinely educated on MLB\u2019s drug program and its consequences. The club added that it fully supports the league\u2019s prevention and treatment framework.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Contract Impact and Recent Performance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Profar will forfeit his <strong>$15 million salary<\/strong> for 2026 as part of a <strong>$42 million, three-year contract<\/strong> that runs through <strong>2027<\/strong>. He previously lost half of his <strong>$12 million<\/strong> salary in <strong>2025<\/strong> due to the earlier suspension.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After returning from the 2025 ban, Profar homered in his first game back on <strong>July 2<\/strong> and finished that season with a <strong>.245<\/strong> average, <strong>14<\/strong> home runs, <strong>43<\/strong> RBIs and a <strong>.787 OPS<\/strong> across <strong>80 games<\/strong>. He was an <strong>All-Star in 2024<\/strong>, when he hit <strong>.280<\/strong> and set career highs with <strong>24<\/strong> home runs, <strong>85<\/strong> RBIs and a <strong>.839 OPS<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Profar also said earlier this spring that he underwent <strong>sports hernia surgery<\/strong> in <strong>November<\/strong> and required roughly <strong>six weeks<\/strong> of recovery. In <strong>four spring training games<\/strong> this year, he went <strong>3-for-10<\/strong> with <strong>three RBIs<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Roster Ripple Effects for Atlanta<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Profar had been expected to serve as the Braves\u2019 primary <strong>designated hitter<\/strong> after the team signed <strong>Mike Yastrzemski<\/strong> to a <strong>$23 million, two-year deal<\/strong> to play left field. With <strong>Michael Harris<\/strong> and <strong>Ronald Acu\u00f1a Jr.<\/strong> also in the outfield, Atlanta has multiple ways to rework its lineup without Profar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One option is increased DH time for <strong>Drake Baldwin<\/strong>, the <strong>2025 NL Rookie of the Year<\/strong>, once catcher <strong>Sean Murphy<\/strong> returns from a hip injury. The Braves could also look to <strong>Eli White<\/strong> for DH at-bats. Atlanta is also dealing with an infield issue, with projected starting shortstop <strong>Ha-seong Kim<\/strong> out due to a finger injury and <strong>Mauricio Dubon<\/strong> expected to open the season at shortstop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The opening created by Profar\u2019s suspension could also benefit <strong>Dominic Smith<\/strong>, who signed a minor league deal on <strong>Feb. 17<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rare Second-Offense Suspension<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>MLB said Profar is the <strong>seventh player<\/strong> to receive a <strong>162-game suspension<\/strong> for a second PED infraction since penalties began in <strong>2004<\/strong>.
