The findings came from a clinical trial that followed participants for 2 years. Researchers measured changes in DNA-based markers tied to biological age rather than calendar age.

The analysis included 958 healthy adults with an average age of about 70. Participants took either a daily multivitamin or a placebo during the trial. Researchers then examined five epigenetic clocks, which estimate how quickly the body is aging at the cellular level.

The multivitamin group showed slower aging on two of the five clocks tested. Researchers estimated the effect at roughly 4 months of reduced biological aging over the 2-year period. The benefit appeared stronger among participants whose biological age was already ahead of their chronological age at the start.

What Researchers Measured

Biological age does not mean the same thing as chronological age. Instead, it reflects patterns in the body that may signal faster or slower aging. In this study, scientists used DNA methylation tools, often called epigenetic clocks, to track those patterns.

The study was part of the larger COSMOS trial, which has also examined cocoa extract and other aging-related outcomes. In this arm of the trial, cocoa extract did not affect any of the five aging clocks. The multivitamin effect was limited but measurable in two validated markers linked to mortality risk.

Researchers said the results add to earlier COSMOS findings on cognition and other age-related outcomes. Even so, they did not claim that multivitamins prevent disease, extend life, or reverse aging. The study focused on biomarker changes rather than hard outcomes such as death rates or major illnesses.

Why Experts Are Cautious

The results have drawn attention because multivitamins are inexpensive, widely available, and easy to use. But several experts have urged caution in interpreting the findings. A small shift in an epigenetic clock does not automatically mean better long-term health.

That caution matters because previous multivitamin research has produced mixed results. Some trials have found modest benefits in narrow areas, while others have found little effect on major health outcomes. This new paper adds an interesting signal, but it does not settle the broader debate over supplements and healthy aging.

Researchers also noted that the clearest benefit was observed among people who already showed faster biological aging at baseline. That raises the possibility that some participants benefited because they had unrecognized nutritional gaps. It also suggests the effect may not be the same for every older adult.

What the Findings Mean for Older Adults

The new paper supports the idea that nutrition may influence aging biology, even later in life. Still, the observed effect was modest. It does not justify broad claims that daily pills can replace a balanced diet, exercise, sleep, or routine medical care.

For now, the strongest takeaway is that multivitamins’ biological aging research is moving beyond marketing language and into measurable lab data. That does not mean everyone should start taking supplements. It means scientists now have more evidence to test in future studies with longer follow-up and more diverse groups.

The study authors say more research is needed to learn whether these biomarker shifts translate into meaningful clinical benefits. Until then, experts continue to frame multivitamins as a possible support tool rather than a proven anti-aging strategy. The findings are promising, but they remain preliminary.

A new study suggests that daily multivitamins may slightly slow biological markers of aging in older adults.
